Fibro homes and coastal weathering on the Peninsula

Redcliffe is one of the older seaside communities in South East Queensland. The Peninsula has plenty of post-war fibro cottages, former beach shacks and mid-century low-set homes, along with older timber houses that have been extended or enclosed over the decades. Many of these were built or altered when asbestos fibre cement sheeting was a common, affordable choice.

Salt air, strong sun and storms off Moreton Bay are hard on old fibre cement. Weathered roof sheeting, cracked eaves and brittle wall cladding are more likely to release fibres if they're damaged or disturbed. On the Peninsula we commonly find asbestos in:

  • external fibro wall cladding, eaves and soffits
  • corrugated asbestos cement roofs on homes, garages and carports
  • wet area linings in original bathrooms and laundries
  • vinyl floor tiles and old sheet vinyl
  • electrical meter boards and fibro fences

24/7 emergency response

When storms roll in off the bay, fibro and old roof sheeting can be cracked by wind or falling branches. Keep everyone clear, don't hose or sweep up the debris, and call 0403 126 276 any time. We'll isolate the area, make it safe and remove the damaged asbestos.

Doing it by the book

We prepare an asbestos removal control plan, notify WorkSafe QLD before licensed removal starts, keep materials wet, double-wrap and label all waste, and dispose of it at a licensed facility. We arrange the clearance inspection and provide documentation once the job is done.

Nearby areas we cover

Beyond the Peninsula we cover North Lakes, Petrie, Caboolture and the wider Moreton Bay region, as well as Brisbane.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the fibro in my Redcliffe home dangerous?

Bonded asbestos in good condition is generally low risk if it's left alone. The risk rises when it's cracked, weathered, broken, or disturbed by drilling, cutting or water-blasting. If you're unsure, have it inspected and tested.

Can you remove an asbestos roof?

Yes. We remove asbestos cement roof sheeting from homes, garages and carports. Installing the replacement roof is outside our scope, so you'll need a separate appropriately licensed trade for that, and we're happy to coordinate timing with them.

Can I water-blast my fibro walls or roof?

No. Using high-pressure water on asbestos materials is prohibited in Queensland because it can release and spread fibres. Talk to us before cleaning or preparing old fibro for painting.

Which council covers Redcliffe?

The Redcliffe Peninsula is part of the City of Moreton Bay, which can advise on local disposal if you're removing a small amount yourself.
