If you think something at your property contains asbestos, don't drill, cut, sand, scrape or water-blast it. Leave it undisturbed and get it checked. We're available 24/7, including weekends and public holidays, for urgent and emergency jobs.

Why asbestos is still common in Brisbane homes

Asbestos-containing materials were widely used in Australia until they were banned nationally at the end of 2003. Queensland Government guidance is that homes built or altered before 1990 are likely to contain some asbestos. In Brisbane that covers a lot of housing, from post-war fibro cottages and 1960s and 70s low-set brick homes to older Queenslanders that were enclosed, extended or re-sheeted over the years.

Brisbane's heat, humidity and summer storms are also hard on old fibre cement. Roof sheeting and external cladding can become weathered and brittle, which raises the risk of fibres being released if the material is damaged.

Common places we find asbestos in Brisbane properties include:

  • fibre cement (fibro) wall cladding, eaves and soffits
  • corrugated asbestos cement roofs on houses, garages, carports and sheds
  • wet area linings behind tiles in older bathrooms and laundries
  • vinyl floor tiles and the backing of old sheet vinyl
  • electrical meter boards
  • fibro fences and garden edging
  • pipe lagging, flue linings and some old insulation, which may be friable

How an asbestos removal job works

  1. Tell us about the job. Use our intake form or call 0403 126 276. Photos help.
  2. Inspection and written quote. We look at the material, its condition, access and quantity. If it's unclear whether something contains asbestos, we'll recommend testing first.
  3. Planning and notification. We prepare an asbestos removal control plan and notify WorkSafe QLD before licensed removal work starts, as the law requires.
  4. Safe removal. The work area is isolated and signed. Materials are kept wet, removed as whole as possible, then double-wrapped in heavy-duty plastic and labelled. Our team works in the correct protective equipment, and air monitoring is arranged where required.
  5. Disposal and clearance. Asbestos waste goes to a facility licensed to accept it. We arrange the clearance inspection and give you the paperwork for your records.

24/7 emergency asbestos response

Storm damage, a fallen tree, a fire, or a car through a fibro wall can leave broken asbestos exposed. Keep people and pets away, don't hose or sweep it up, and call 0403 126 276, day or night. We can isolate the area, make it safe and remove the damaged material, and we provide documentation of the work for your insurer or property manager.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove asbestos myself in Queensland?

Homeowners can remove up to 10 square metres of bonded (non-friable) asbestos from their own home, but must follow safe work procedures and dispose of it lawfully. More than 10 square metres requires a certificate approved by Queensland Health. Friable asbestos must be removed by an appropriately licensed removalist, and businesses removing asbestos must be licensed by WorkSafe QLD.

What is the difference between bonded and friable asbestos?

Bonded (non-friable) asbestos is held firmly in a material such as cement sheeting. Friable asbestos can be crumbled by hand and releases fibres more easily, so it must be removed by an appropriately licensed removalist. We provide WorkSafe QLD licensed asbestos removal.

How do I know if my Brisbane home has asbestos?

You can't tell reliably by looking. If your home was built or altered before 1990, assume it may contain asbestos until a sample has been tested. We can inspect, take samples safely and give you a report.

How much does asbestos removal cost?

Every job is different. Price depends on the type and amount of material, its condition, access and disposal requirements. We provide a written quote after an inspection or once we've reviewed your photos and details.

Do you offer emergency asbestos removal?

Yes. We're available 24/7 for storm, fire, impact and water damage involving asbestos. Call 0403 126 276 at any time.
